“The Brass Ring”

Michael is an artist in Front Royal, Virginia. His work is influenced by classical antiquity, paintings from the Baroque period and American Impressionism. He is an accomplished equestrian artist that most recently received the Else Tuckerman Award for portraiture. His compositions range from locally inspired images of Virginia to classical themes mixed with symbolism.

Although oil painting is his primary medium, he also uses charcoal and conté to create dramatic works on paper. Michael is currently expanding past his studio
work into Plein Air painting. He also likes to explore the medium of digital art as a professional illustrator. You may recognize his beer label illustrations at Front Royal Brewing Company.

Before becoming a full-time artist, Michael had a successful career in visual merchandising at The Home Depot. During his tenure he had the privilege of leading a dedicated, talented organization that improved everything they
touched.

Originally from Fredericksburg, VA, Michael earned a B.F.A. in 2000 from Virginia Commonwealth University’s Painting and Printmaking program, with an emphasis in traditional oil painting. He closely studied under Batu Siharulidze, a Georgian born sculptor of international renown. His time with Batu greatly influenced his use of form and its importance in painting and drawing.

In addition to being an artist, Michael is co-owner of a fine art gallery, Art in the Valley, along with his wife, Tiffany. They live in Front Royal, VA with their two daughters, two dogs, a cat, and a goldfish.
